My Christmas Tablescape Tuesday 12/28/10

These vintage plates were one of many things my Grandmother gave to me this year. I love these plates - they're what we ate off of every Christmas at her house. Another cool thing She gave me were Santa vintage candles. Its neat to see these things in pottery barn or target as new "vintage" when I have the real thing.

Oh, and if you like the bow napkin fold, here's how!

Christmas (Eve) Dinner

Mike and I decided to have a nice little Christmas of our own. We opened presents this morning. We played board games and ate party food I made for lunch. Later I made chex mix to bring to his families tomorrow. Then, I roasted a chicken (my 1st time cooking a whole bird of any kind) for dinner. I also finally made successful gravey, Mike roasted potatoes, and we had greenbeans with almonds.

My Fall Tablescape and Place Cards!

Here are some pics of my table using various fall decor.

Now here are some quick place card ideas I put together. Please excuse the tape and my hand writing as I was just trying out some of the ideas I've seen across the web - Unfortunately, Thanksgiving will not be at my house this year.

The leaf says "Jess"

It Was a VT Football game day when I was taking these pictures
I love fall colors - Maroon and Orange! (the obvious choice for my table)

Fall Flower bouquet Mike bought me.

Here's some more ideas I liked for Thanksgiving:

Halloween is over :(

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to put the decorations away and bring out the rest of the fall ones. However, my tablecloth needed to be ironed or steamed so I went with a Pottery Barn inspired setting in the meantime.

Squash Pasta

Food Network's Ellie Krieger has a great recipe for a light "Squash mac & cheese" however, to me, it's more like a squash flavored cheesey pasta because nothing compare to a full fat mac n cheese.

The flavors were perfect for a fall evening and it was pretty easy. We enjoyed it with a pumpkin ale on a quick fall/Halloweenish place setting. The recipe makes A LOT more than the two of us could eat for dinner, so we froze the rest. Update: it reheated nicely in the microwave after thawing at room temp.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 2 (10-ounce) packages frozen pureed winter squash
  • 2 cups 1 percent lowfat milk
  • 4 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar, grated (about 1 1/3 cups)
  • 2 ounces Monterrey jack cheese, grated (about 2/3 cup)
  • 1/2 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon powdered mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unseasoned bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9 by 13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook until tender but firm, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, place the frozen squash and milk into a large saucepan and cook over a low heat, stirring occasionally and breaking up the squash with a spoon until it is defrosted. Turn the heat up to medium and cook until the mixture is almost simmering, stirring occasionally. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the Cheddar, jack cheese, ricotta cheese, salt, mustard and cayenne pepper. Pour cheese mixture over the macaroni and stir to combine. Transfer the macaroni and cheese to the baking dish.

Combine bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese and oil in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the macaroni and cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, then broil for 3 minutes so the top is crisp and nicely browned.

Tablescape...Thursdays?

Obviously, I’m not as original as I first thought. People have been blogging about tablescapes for a while now and who wouldn’t want to? While some have given up on the task of sharing weekly wonderful table settings, I found one blogger on her 111th tablescape thursday! So since it is Thursday (and you’re patiently waiting for my Tuesday edition) here’s a link to hers. One really cool thing is each post seems to be of her own table!

Tablescape Tuesday 8/31/10

Tablescape Tuesday 8/31/10
When talking about wonderful tablescapes its hard not to mention Pottery Barn.
The tablescape shown here is party of their “party planner” guides that include all sorts of great ideas for parties, recipes, how tos, and extras like printable invitations and play lists. Obviously, they also include what serving pieces and linens you can include.
This is from the party planner guide to “Mediterranean Tapas”. This is a great idea as summer is still with us, but we may be getting tired of the traditional barbecue.

Tablescape Tuesday 8/24/2010

I recently saw a great post by Turquoise, tulips, and bliss called “Tablescape Tuesday” Here’s one she featured that has the same theme as the shower - Hawaiian!

While hers is not a weekly posting, I think it should be!! I’ll start with the lovely cake display the maid of honor put together for the bridal shower over the weekend.

Easter Dinner

This was the 1st holiday dinner at my place! My parents joined Mike and I for Easter Dinner.
Menu- Bourbon glazed ham, au gratin potatoes (both Mike’s Mom’s recipe), Fresh steamed green beans, and lemon bars my mom bought for dessert (which I should get her recipe they were delicious!).
Table setting- I went for bright colors (as opposed to pastels) so some of the pieces could be reused for summer. The overall theme was spring gardening. Chalk board wine glasses als0 the place cards from pier 1, silver rimmed water glasses form target, plain white dishes from Ikea, flatware from Cuisinart, Chargers ramekins and Napkins from Crate and Barrel (I loved their spring line), candy in ramekins is from Walmart (their easter candy is color coordinated which made selecting it easier- included edible grass), the small pots were actually the dessert dished from Logan’s Steakhouse that I collected,  watering can is from Michaels, and the lovely flowers are from Mike.  :)
